3D Plots

Unsteady Cockpit

MEMS Mirror

Two-axis Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) mirror. The displacement is achieved using electrodes placed underneath the mirror (not shown). This type of mirror can be used to build an optical switch for use in the telecommunications industry.

Iso Surfaces

Tollmien-Schlichting Waves

The results of hypersonic boundary layer receptivity experiments. Periodic glow discharges radiate controlled acoustic pulsations in the free stream. The acoustic waves incident onto the leading edge of the tested flat plate generate Tollmien-Schlichting waves in the boundary layer.

Reservoir Plot

An RGB reservoir plot. Oil is red, water is blue and gas is green. The symbols are sized by pressure. In this example, you can see high pressure water at the top and middle of the field.

Axial Velocity Field

Simulated color-Doppler ultrasound display of the peak axial (Z) velocity field computed in a realistic 3-D finite element model of a patient's diseased carotid artery.

Basin Sea Simulation

Applying Texture Mapping to Digital Evalavtion Map (DEM) Files

An aerial site photograph and DEM information is used to generate texture mapping on 3-D surfaces. This plot shows contamination profiles of benzene.

Benzene Wells

Bipolar Transistor

Technology Computer-Aided Design (TCAD) simulation results for a bipolar transistor.

Blowtorch

Building 3-D Volume from 2-D Slices

A series of 2-D slices - horizontal planes from a brain MRI, were used to create this 3-D plot.

Temperature Distribution

Simulation of the surface temperature distribution on a female breast. This is done to investigate an abnormality in the surface plot for breast tumor identification and for the development of a cancer detection tool.

Liquid-Glide-Back-Booster

The plot below summarizes the results of several hundred Cart 3D simulations on the Liquid-Glide-Back-Booster (a conceptual design for a new, reusable launch vehicle). The plot shows the variation of lift with mach number and angle of attach. Each sphere in the plot represents one CFD run and is sized by the number of iterations in the run.

Fluid Blowtorch

Mercury Simulation

Proton beams accelerated to impact with liquid mercury.

Missile Shockwave

Building 3-D Volume from 2-D Slices

A series of 2-D slices - horizontal planes from a brain MRI, were used to create this 3-D plot.

Urban Contamination

Using Tecplot, David S. DeCroix visualized a large eddy dispersion simulation in an urban area. Visualizing dispersion may help protect people against chemical accidents or biological weapons attacks.

Contaminant

Spheres indicate the exact well and measurement locations used to gauge contaminant concentrations. Translucent iso-surfaces provide an understanding of the general shape and size of the area, as well as the concentration of trichloroethylene. The spheres are colored by perchloroethylene concentrations and sized by CB isomer concentrations.

Contaminant Concentrations

3-D data obtained by drilling a number of wells and measuring contaminant concentrations of various chemicals at different depths.

Multiple Contour Layers

Coronal Mass Ejections

Understanding the dynamics of the solar atmosphere helps explain eruptions called coronal mass ejections (CME). Predicting the cause of these eruptions is an important scientific challenge.

Custom Color Mapping

Environmental and geological data can appear more natural with the use of custom color maps. For this plot, the User-Defined color map option is used to make elevation data of western Washington appear more realistic.
