America's Cup
Flash animation of SPLASH unsteady simulation results for an America's Cup yacht moving through oblique seas.

Multiple Frames
2-D Grid views display one plane at a time. You may choose both the view direction (I, J, or K planes, plus R or Theta views for radial grids) and the plane number. When viewing multi-frame 2-D grid plots, one frame can be switched to a Quick 3-D view, making it easier to locate the plane being displayed.

Bubble Behavior
Using Tecplot, Dr. Choi visualizes bubble behavior in a propeller's tip vortex flow field. Understanding bubble behavior helps build mechanical systems such as marine propellers and turbines that produce less noise, last longer, and run more efficiently.

Plane Wave Propagation

Surface Chemistry
The chamber has several pillars in it to increase the surface area. The pillars are about 20 microns in diameter. As the DNA flows past the pillars, it hybridizes with probes bound to the pillar surfaces. This type of surface chemistry is often used in drug discovery, as well bio-sensing. The simulation was performed with ReactSim - Coventor's bio-chemical reaction simulation tool.

Extruder
Finite element simulation of flow in twin screw extruder mixing elements. The animation displays the motion of flow tracers in the kneading discs of a co-rotating twin screw extruder. This is part of VĂctor Bravo's PhD thesis involving the 3-D flow of polymer melts in this type of equipment.

Fish Path
Paul Williams at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Portland, Oregon wanted to track the path of individual fish. Each sphere in the animation is one fish's path. The volume zone is the river, ending at the dam.

Ceramic Rod on Impact

Glacier Reconstruction
Tecplot is used to animate simulated glacier growth in Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming. The simulation reconstructs a glacier that existed there approximately 18,000 years ago. Simulations like this help researchers gain a better understanding of past climatic changes, ultimately improving our ability to predict how increasing greenhouse gases will affect our modern climate.

This plot shows results from a rigorous, mass conservative, fully-coupled simulation of surface water and groundwater with chemical transport on the Mobile and connected rivers, estuaries, bays and aquifers in Alabama.

Monterey Bay
Stephen Wiggins and Chad Coulliette at California Institute of Technology Caltech) use the theory of dynamical systems and chaos to study transport in turbulent flows with organized structures, such as eddies and jets. The dynamical systems perspective allows them to see structure within a turbulent flow and to better understand what is causing the structure.

New Zealand Tide
This plot shows how the primary M2 tide for New Zealand propagates in a counterclockwise direction around the country (a Kelvin wave), completing the cycle every 12.4 hours. Red represents high tide, blue represents low tide, and green represents zero elevation. It shows that at any time there is a high tide somewhere on the New Zealand coast. This is very unusual and occurs only one other place - Iceland.

Splash Plate
Tecplot is used to visualize liquid flowing through a 32 millimeter bore splash-plate nozzle. Flow simulations help improve nozzle design and predict flow characteristics before actual prototyping. Better nozzle designs improve the efficiency of spraying systems in fuel injectors, burners, printers, sprinklers, vehicles, and many other products.

Ocean Temperature

Pipe Flow
Vortex rings in a simulated pipe flow sinusoidally-forced (pulsed) in the axial direction.

Oil Platform
Exmar Offshore Company's design of the semi-submersible platform "Exmar-2500" for deep water drilling.

Web Optimization
The animation is optimized for Web display. JPEG compression is used to reduce file size. Smaller files enable animations to be served more quickly on the Web.

Rotor Revolution
This plot depicts a monster amount of X-Y data taken over one rotor revolution across a radial grid. At the beginning of the animation nothing much is happening and then you will see the blade come by. Shortly thereafter a very clean vortex will move across the grid.

Sandstone
Movement of a concentration front injected into a fractured sandstone sample with a diameter of 28cm. The injected conservative tracer volume is 30ml. The pressure at the inlet is constant (Dirichlet) pi=11630 Pa. The outflow is taken from the experiment at q=2.4 ml/s. The shown contour variable is the relative concentration.

Normal Plate Impact Simulation

Stream traces
This animation was created using Tecplot's stream trace animation macro.

Simulation of a modified Taylor rod impact experiment, in which an aluminum anvil strikes a confined or unconfined ceramic rod.

TCE Concentrations

Thruster
Tecplot is used to animate simulated transit-time oscillations inside the discharge channel of a Hall Effect thruster onboard an Air Force satellite. Oscillations can reduce the overall efficiency of the thruster and decrease its life. This movie represents the first successful 2-D simulation of this detrimental phenomena.

New Zealand Tide
Cook Strait is the stretch of water between New Zealand's North Island and the South Island. At times there is high tide on one side and low tide on the other. This means there is a two meter difference in sea level across a relatively small distance. This causes a very strong tidal flow, as seen in the tidal currents animation.

Urban Dispersion
Using Tecplot, David S. DeCroix visualizes a large eddy dispersion simulation in an urban area. Visualizing dispersion may help protect people against chemical accidents or biological weapons attacks.

VC Concentration

Helicopter Wake

Upper plot shows pore water velocities, equipotential lines, percent of saturation for vadose zone above water table and particle paths (calculated by Tecplot's CFD Analyzer). Lower left plot is the same as upper plot but with more Z-exaggeration. Only the particle tracks and the river are shown in this frame. Table of values shows water fluxes across the flux planes shown in the upper plot. The lower X-Y plot shows the boundary conditions at the river and on the western edge of the model

Oil Spill

Hovering Helicopter Rotor Wake
This is a 3-D plot also known as a "fence" plot. The single rotor blade is shown as well as the motor and counterweight. The rotor is thrusting upwards and the flow passes down through the X-Y plane. Trailing from the tip of the blade is a vortex filament shown by the red line. In contrast to a fixed-wing aircraft, the vortices trailing from a hovering helicopter remain in close proximity to the aircraft lifting surfaces. Slices of the flow field (PIV image frames) are shown at various azimuthal locations with respect to the rotor blade. In each frame contours of vorticity are plotted. The vorticity is computed from the 3-D measurements of the velocity field
