Solution: With large complex plots you must balance the need for quality with the need for small files. To decrease the file size just use JPEG image type and try a lower image quality setting. The default JPEG quality of 75 seems to be a good compromise between quality and file size. For mesh plots or complicated line plots JPEG compression may not be a good choice.
