Problem: What AVI compression schemes/codecs do Tecplot products use?

Solution: The 2008 R2 versions of Tecplot 360 and Tecplot Focus use three compression schemes. They are described below:

  1. Line Preserving was the only AVI compression scheme in Tecplot 8 through Tecplot 360 and Focus 2008 Release 1. It should work with any AVI player on any machine and on any OS. No codec is necessary. The limitation of the Line Preserving compression is that each frame of the animation is limited to 256 colors.
  2. Color Preserving new in Tecplot 360 2008 Release 2 uses the MSVC codec. This compression method should always be available on Windows platforms but may need to be downloaded separately to play on other platforms. This codec uses 24-bit (16 million) color information for each frame but it is compressed so there may still be apparent color loss.
  3. Lossless uncompressed is in DIB format which is similar to the Line Preserving format except that each frame can have 16 million colors.
