Tecplot, Inc. Observes 30th Birthday

Company focus remains fixed on serving the customer, providing best CFD visualization and simulation analytics tools possible

BELLEVUE, WA—July 1, 2011—Tecplot, Inc., a provider of CFD visualization software, today marked a significant milestone: its thirtieth birthday.

“What I’ve valued the most over the past 30 years is simply seeing other people get some really cool things done,” said Mike Peery, Tecplot CEO and president. “That, and feeling good about what we do for our customers. One of my favorite customer comments we’ve received over the years has been ‘Tecplot helps me find the truth in my data.’ And now here we are in our thirtieth year about to launch the next big thing for our customers: Tecplot Chorus, the first CFD simulation analytics tool.”

“The whole team looks forward to serving our customers for many years to come by providing innovative tools and services that help them get their work done faster and better than ever before,” he added.

Corporate History

Founded by Kelton M. (Mike) Peery and Donald (Don) Roberts, the company was incorporated in the State of Washington on July 1, 1981 as Amtec Engineering, Inc. Its original objective was to develop and market general computational fluid dynamics (CFD) products and services. After many sales pitches, the fledgling enterprise got off the ground with several CFD-related contracts from Rocket Research, Boeing, NASA, and Pratt & Whitney. By 1983, it became evident that an in-house data visualization capability was needed to view the complex CFD results that Peery and Roberts were generating. Since no commercial software was available, they hired a part-time developer to create the software they needed. The resulting application evolved into a sophisticated CFD visualization package called “Tecplot.” In 1988, Tecplot was released commercially, becoming Amtec’s first software product for the scientific visualization market. Later named Tecplot 360, it has become the product and the visualization tool of choice for thousands of engineers and scientists worldwide.

In 2002, a reservoir simulation product for the oil and gas industry called Tecplot RS was added to the product line. The company changed its name to Tecplot, Inc. in 2003, in part to eliminate confusion with companies with similar names, but primarily to capitalize on the brand awareness and positive mindshare of the company’s flagship product, Tecplot. In 2006, the company introduced Tecplot Focus, an engineering plotting tool and changed the name of its flagship product to Tecplot 360 to fully differentiate the company’s offerings.

The newest member of the Tecplot product line, Tecplot Chorus™, was announced in May 2011. Tecplot Chorus is CFD simulation analytics software for engineers and scientists who need to quickly discover trends and anomalies in CFD studies with a large number of cases and, simultaneously, gain insights into the underlying, fluid-dynamic phenomena that cause these variations. Armed with a better understanding of what causes variations in the results, users will be able to make better and faster decisions. Part of an exciting new product category, Tecplot Chorus is in beta testing with a select group of key customers and will be available for purchase in the third quarter of this year.
