Tecplot 360 2018 Release 2

This release is largely focused on our users in the geosciences, but there are benefits for the broader community – such as new colormaps and handy Python scripts. Read on to see what’s new. For Geoscientists

New FVCOM loader. FVCOM is a popular ocean model used around the word. Our FVCOM loader is fast and memory efficient.

ROMS, WRF, Telemac loaders. Loaders for these popular models did not quite make the cut for this release. They will be available upon request. Contact support@tecplot.com to gain access to loaders for these models.

Sequential – Viridis & cmocean colormaps. Which colormap you use to represent your data makes a difference. Sequential – Viridis is the new default. Also, check out the new cmocean colormaps copyright (c) 2015 Kristen M. Thyng. Get more details on the cmocean colormaps: cmocean on GitHub.

Georeferenced images may now be imported into Tecplot 360. Georeferenced images can provide important context when viewing geographic model results and work with both 3D and 2D plot types. Watch the video: Georeferenced Images in Tecplot 360.

Shapefile converter. While it’s not part of the installation, we’ve recently developed a PyTecplot script which converts shapefiles to Tecplot binary PLT files. Like georeferenced images, shapefiles can provide important context when looking at your model results.

Handy PyTecplot scripts. PyTecplot makes the slow things fast and the hard things possible. In conjunction with this release, we’ve developed a few PyTecplot scripts to help you analyze your data. Check out our new GitHub page – Handyscripts for Python – for some scripts that will help automate your workflows and perform advanced analysis. Here are just a few:

  • TimeAverage.py – Computes a time average of your transient data. Watch the video: Calculating Average Over Time.
  • VerticalTransect.py – Computes a vertical transect (curved slice) from a set of defined XY point locations (requires a ‘siglev’ variable which exists in FVCOM data). Watch the video: Computing a Vertical Transect in Tecplot 360.
  • VerticalProfile.py – Extracts a vertical line through time and plots the results in a new frame. This is useful if you want to view well data or understand what is happening in a water column.
  • ImagetoPLT.py – Creates an IJ ordered zone from an image file. To view the results, you will have to use RGB coloring and ensure the RGB color range is from 0-255. This script can be useful if you have an image you want to drape over a topography – draping will require interpolation of Z values to the image. This script works with georeferenced images by looking for a paired world file.

Colormaps (and a new default!)

We’ve added 19 new colormaps to the selection in Tecplot 360, including using Sequential – Viridis by default. Over the past decade, research has revealed many negative aspects of the Rainbow colormap. That same research has suggested better colormaps which are perceptually linear or diverging. This change of default may affect the result of scripts. If you need to switch back to Small Rainbow, you can change the default by adding the following lines (for example) to your tecplot.cfg file:

PyTecplot

PyTecplot is faster! We’ve made significant improvements in the speed of PyTecplot. Running in connected mode will typically be 3-5 times faster. We have also cut the time it takes to import so your script will begin execution sooner.

Loader Updates

  • Excel Add-In now includes the filename in Zone Auxiliary Data of each created zone, so you can more easily identify from which file the zone originated.
  • CONVERGE Output file loader – CONVERGE users can now load the cell averaged output files (not the post*.out files) in a single step with this new loader. This loader is also available in Tecplot for CONVERGE.

Multiselect & Context Menus

Tecplot 360 now allows you to group select multiple items, such as text and geometries. We’ve also added brand new context menus for text and geometry objects. Give it a shot by right-clicking when you have a piece of text selected.

Iso-surface Tool: Change iso-surface values interactively. Define and use up to eight different iso-surface groups on one or more variables.

Streamtrace Tool: Interactively seed rakes of streamlines, streamrods and streamribbons in 2D and 3D. Specify lines to terminate streamlines. Display markers along streamlines spaced by vector magnitude. Auto seed streamtraces on a selected surface.

Getting Started

Q: How can I get started using Tecplot 360?
The fastest way to get up and running with Tecplot 360 is follow the steps in Getting Started with Tecplot 360.

Your Tecplot 360 installation has an “examples” folder, which contains several sample data files in Tecplot format. To open them, go to File > Load Data File(s), select the Tecplot Data Loader, and choose a data set.

For questions on how to perform specific actions in Tecplot 360, we recommend referring to the product User Manual in our documentation.

The documentation links are also available from the Welcome Screen after you run Tecplot 360.

Q: What is the first thing I need to do in order to make the plots I want to see?
If you’re new to Tecplot 360, we recommend that you start by working through the tutorials provided in the Getting Started Guide included in your installation, or see the product documentation. Also visit Getting Started with Tecplot 360.


Downloading and Upgrading Software

Q: Where do I download the latest software version?
Tecplot 360 can be downloaded through our customer portal, My Tecplot link in the top menu. You will be prompted to log in to access the software downloads. If you do not already have an account, you can request one.

Q: How do I export an image when I have hundreds of zones?
If you have hundreds of zones it can be time consuming to switch to each zone and export an image.  Macros can be used here to automatically activate each zone in succession and export an image.

  1. Scripting > Record Macro,
  2. Activate a zone,
  3. Export image
  4. Stop recording.

Then edit the macro file using a text editor and encase the export and activate call in a LOOP and ENDLOOP.  Check the Scripting Guide in our documentation for additional information about these commands.

Q: Will macros and add-ons be compatible with Tecplot 360 EX?
Newer Tecplot 360 versions are backwards compatible with earlier versions of Tecplot 360.

  • TecIO files are compatible with all versions of Tecplot 360.
  • Add-ons will have to be recompiled. They are source compatible, but the libraries will need to be updated.
  • Existing Macros are compatible with earlier Tecplot 360 versions. However, Macros created with Tecplot 360 2014 and later are not backwards compatible with earlier versions.

Q: What versions of Tecplot software do you currently support?
Technical support is offered to license holders who have a current TecPLUS™ subscription for software releases delivered in the current year and the past two calendar years. Q: Can my older version of Tecplot 360 read .szplt format?
Newer Tecplot 360 versions are backwards compatible with earlier versions of Tecplot 360.
Versions of Tecplot 360 released before 2014 cannot read SZL (.szplt) file format. We recommend updating to the newest version.

Q: How do I set-up transient (time-varying) animation in Tecplot 360?
The Edit Time Strand tool can be used to set-up your data to be recognized as Transient. A Strand and SolutionTime will need to be assigned for each zone. Zones that are active at the same time step need to share SolutionTime, but have different Strand IDs.

Q: What is SZL(subzone load-on-demand) technology?
SZL stands for subzone load-on-demand. It is our proprietary technology that increases memory efficiency by combining data management algorithms, advanced data requirement predictors, parallelization and additional code optimizations.

Q: What is the difference between the different versions of Tecplot 360?

Tecplot 360 2017

The 2017 release of Tecplot 360 was packed with many new features, improvements and fixes. First and foremost is TecPLUS, which brings you access to three new software components:

  • Chorus. Explore large data sets composed of multiple solutions or experiments.
  • PyTecplot. Speed automation and the ability to link workflows together with this Python API.
  • SZL Server. Access your remote data with this client-server model using our proprietary SZL (sub-zone load on demand) technology

Tecplot 360 2014-2016

Tecplot 360 was re-released in 2014 with significant performance and usability improvements. The incorporation of SZL™ technology speeds up data loading and processing by an order of magnitude, and lowers memory usage for typical workflows on large data sets, especially over networks.

A modern UI framework provides a native look and feel across all platforms, including Linux and Mac. Usability improvements include:

  • Dockable sidebars, right-click context menus, more flexible toolbar, and redesigned Zone and Mapping Style dialog.
  • Multiple solutions can be compared in side-by-side PowerPoint-like layouts with Pages and Frames.
  • Streamlined data loading means fewer clicks for 30 common CFD data types.
  • Interactive arbitrary slicing allows slices to be oriented in any direction, not just along the axes.
  • Text objects may be copied directly from the layout and pasted into other applications.
  • Curve information may be displayed directly on a plot by right-clicking the curve.
  • New default style to improve usability and yield the best performance “out of the box.”

Installation and Running Multiple Versions

Q: I installed the trial version, do I need to uninstall it before installing my purchased version?
You do not need to uninstall the trial version. The installation of Tecplot software remains the same regardless of the license type.

Q: If I want to install Tecplot Software on a new computer, is a new license key needed?
The answer depends on which type of license you have.

Single-user license

If you have a single-user license, use your Activation Code to run Tecplot software on up to 3 computers. If you are not using an Activation code, you will need a new license key to migrate your Tecplot software to a new computer. You can request a new license key (up to 3) from our customer portal, My Tecplot (link at the top of page).

If you do not have a current TecPLUS service, please read our Support Policy.

Network license

If you have a network license, you will not need a new license key. Install your software on the new computer, choose the network install mode, and include your license server name when prompted. Your software should run successfully as long as your license manager is set up correctly.

Q: Can multiple versions of Tecplot software be run on the same computer?
Yes, multiple versions of Tecplot software can run on the same computer. Similarly, Tecplot 360, Tecplot Focus, Tecplot RS can be run on the same computer.

Q: Can Tecplot 360, Tecplot Focus, and Tecplot RS be run on the same computer?
Yes, the products can run on the same computer without conflicting with each other.

Q: Can Tecplot softare be run on a virtual machine?
With a network license, Tecplot software can be run on a virtual machine.

A single-user license key does not allow running on a virtual machine. If you need to use Tecplot software on a virtual machine with a single-user license, please email Technical Support to explain your situation.

Q: After installation, the box for inputting the key is blocked. How can I get my Key?
You can get a license key through our customer portal, My Tecplot (link at the top of page).


How to Purchase & License Renewal

Q: How much will it cost to upgrade to the newest version if I renew my license?
For customers with a current TecPLUS service, there is no charge to upgrade from an earlier version of Tecplot software. If your TecPLUS has expired, you can request a renewal.

Licenses and License Keys

Q: How can I get a license key needed to run Tecplot software?
Single-user licenses for Tecplot software released in 2016 or later can be activated with an Activation Code. The Activation Code is provided to you when you purchase or renew your TecPLUS service for a single-user license. Once the Tecplot installation has finished, you will be asked to enter in the Activation Code on your first start-up.

A license key file is required to run Tecplot Software released before 2016, Network licenses, or if you do not have an internet connection.

Q: Do I need to install a license manager to run Tecplot software?
Current Tecplot network licenses require an installation of a Reprise License Manager (RLM). Single-user Tecplot licenses do not.

Q: How do I install my license key after I receive it?
After you install your software, you will need to activate it.

Instructions are available in the activation_instructions.html file located in the directory where Tecplot is installed.
